Dr. A. E. Joan Abohwheyere

President

Durham

Dr A.E. Joan Abohweyere is a pediatrician trained in Nigeria, UK and Canada. She currently works in the Durham region at Lakeridge Health and is an adjunct professor of paediatrics with Queens University, Kingston.

She believes that the Pediatricians Alliance of Ontario is equipped to advocated for our society’s most vulnerable members and will initiate vital change helping children and youth throughout the province.

Dr. Richa Agnihotri

Dr. Richa Agnihotri is a consultant community paediatrician in the beautiful Niagara Region, who is a passionate child and youth health and wellbeing advocate.

She completed her medical school in the United Kingdom, followed by General Paediatrics residency at Western University. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) at McMaster University, the President of the Community Paediatrics Section of the Canadian Paediatric Society, and is a member of the Early Years Task Force, the Anti-Racism MedEd Working Group, and Sleep Special Interest Group of the Canadian Paediatric Society.

Her special interest is in child development, behaviour, and mental health, leading her to further train in paediatric mental health-related diagnosis and management, including ADHD, utism, anxiety, depression, and trauma. She has received training in providing CBT for anxiety and continues to expand her skills depending on her community’s needs.

Having seen many of the downstream effects on the health of kids and adults, her passion lies in upstream prevention. She is certified in plant based nutrition and healthcare coaching, and is Board Certified in Lifestyle Medicine. She utilizes evidence-based lifestyle related strategies to collaborate with kids and their families in order to create comprehensive plans that enhance each child’s health and well-being.

Dr. Hassan Merali

Dr. Hasan Merali is an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, McMaster University and a pediatric emergency medicine physician at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on child injury prevention in low- and middle-income countries. He has published more than twenty-five peer-reviewed journal articles, and his work has been featured in The New York Times, BBC, CNN, Science, Medium, The Boston Globe, NBC, CBC, HuffPost, and Popular Science.

 

Dr. Mohammed Hassan-Ali

Dr. Mohammed Hassan-Ali is a double-board certified consultant paediatrican serving the Peel and Halton regions. His focus is on hospital-based paediatrics as well as complex care.

During his pediatric training, he was involved in several committees including EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) groups, CPS (Canadian Pediatric Society) council, and PGME (Post Graduate Medical Education) committees. He is passionate about these topics and hopes to contribute to these areas as a community pediatrician. As the winner of the Bosco Paes teaching award, he is also committed to teaching and medical education.

Dr. Hassan-Ali is active on social media where he focuses on a wide variety of pediatric topics such as: primary prevention, newborn care, parenting and child mental health, as well as tackling medical misinformation.

Dr. Ripudaman Minhas

Dr. Ripudaman Singh Minhas is a Developmental Paediatrician with the Women’s and Children’s Health Program at St Michael’s Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Toronto. His research interests are in the development, behaviour, disability, and rehabilitation of children in urban settings and in newcomer immigrant and refugee families. He is currently working to develop interventions to support the developmental potential of children in the unique context of their social determinants of health and inequity. His team uses Community-Based Participatory Research principles to guide the co-creation and implementation of family-based interventions and the evolution of health systems.

His current focus is in supporting parenting in communities experiencing marginalization. This includes the Maple Circle program which aims to support the parenting journey of families of refugee background, and Punjabi Kids’ Health, a social media-based health literacy program to support families in the global Punjabi diaspora.

Dr. Minhas has conducted research on populations in Kenya, Uganda, and India, examining various aspects of early childhood development, injury and disability, and the developmental care of immigrant, refugee, and internationally adopted children in Toronto.

Dr. Minhas completed the Developmental Pediatrics subspecialty training program at the University of Toronto and the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. He was a Global Health Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, and completed his Master of Public Health and a certificate in Global Health there. Dr. Minhas completed his medical degree at the University of Toronto, with General Paediatrics residency at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Angie Roberts

Executive Director

Niagara

Angie Roberts began her role as the Executive Director of the Pediatricians Alliance of Ontario, and its sister organization, the Pediatric Section, OMA in Fall 2020.

Angie brings her past experiences working and teaching in post-secondary education paired with an Honours in Fine Art to creatively and passionately work with the Pediatricians of Ontario.

Angie lives in the Niagara region with her husband and two young sons where she is also a professional photographer.
